CELEBRATE TEXAS INDEPENDENCE DAY
ART AND ESSAY CONTEST


Celebrate Texas is pleased to announce our annual Art and Essay Contest, to commemorate March 2, Texas Independence Day. The 2005 contest has first, second, and third place winners in four geographical areas. The first place High school winner will receive a $1,000.00 college scholarship. The second and third place high school winners will also receive prizes as well as the middle and elementary school’s first, second, and third place winners.

The contest entries must be postmarked by February 2, 2005 and the winners will be announced on March 2, 2005 at the celebration in the State Capitol routunda. The program will be at 12:00 noon. This year’s topic for each school level is as follows:

ELEMENTARY ART: What I Like Best About Texas.
MIDDLE SCHOOL ESSAY: Why I Am Proud to be a Texan
HIGH SCHOOL ESSAY: What Makes Texas Unique?

It is our desire that students learn about and love their state, TEXAS. This contest may be used as a teaching tool, a springboard for discussion, or a home activity for extra credit. Additional entry forms may be downloaded, and high school scholarship rules are posted below. Teachers are allowed to sign permission for the student’s entry. This is a “blind” entry, so please insure that the students do not write their name on any of their work in the section below for copying and pasting their essay entry.

with your essay or artwork to Celebrate Texas, 3005 S. Lamar, D-109, Box 360, Austin, Texas, 78704.
Artwork must only be submitted by mail.


Winners:
Winners will be announced at noon on March 2 at the State Capitol.


ART AND ESSAY CONTESTS


ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ART CONTEST
Award: The first-place winner in each district will have their winning entry custom framed, compliments of The Frame Corner of Austin, Texas, and returned to the winners.

This year’s subject is "What I Like Best About Texas". The artwork must be on a plain sheet of 8 1/2” x 11” paper. The student shall draw the picture by hand and color it as they see fit. Computer generated or three-dimensional art will not be accepted. The student is encouraged to label their art. The student’s name MUST NOT be written on the artwork itself.

To enter, 1) download the registration form, clip out the Contest Entry Form, fill it out, checking the “Elementary Art Contest” block and attach it to the entry. Send the entry to the address on the entry form. Artwork must be submitted by mail.

MIDDLE SCHOOL ESSAY CONTEST
Award: First, Second and Third place winners will receive prizes to be announced later on the Celebrate Texas website.
The subject of this year’s essay is
"Why I Am Proud To Be A Texan". The essay must be on plain white 8 1/2” x 11”, no longer than two pages in length. The entry should be typewritten using a typeface no smaller than 10pt. The work must be the student’s original work; no copies of existing work shall be considered. The student’s name MUST NOT be written on the essay itself.

To enter, 1) download the registration form, clip out the Contest Entry Form, fill it out, checking the “Middle School Essay Contest” block and attach it to the entry, submitting it to the address on the entry form, or 2) Completing the online registration section belowfor the Middle School Essay Contest, copying and pasting the essay in the indicated space.

HIGH SCHOOL ESSAY CONTEST
Award: The four First place winners will be awarded a $1,000 Scholarship (subject to the Scholarship Award Rules). Second and Third place winners will receive prizes to be announced later on the Celebrate Texas website.
